TALKIN' BOUT A HEAT WAAAVE For three days it has been in the high 80s/low 90s & sunny in downtown San Francisco. It feels very much like an east coast early summer. I rode my bike to work yesterday (it was Ride Your Bike To Work Day) & then went to a friend's house in the hood in the evening to sit on a stoop & drink beer while what seemed like the entire neighborhood came out to join us (it was go hang out in the neighborhood & drink beer on a stoop day, too).
For three nights now, I've slept with my windows thrown wide open. It's been warm & amazing, & I've slept soundly. Two mornings ago I had vivid dreams about a really bright, beautiful sunrise -- in sailing terms, that means sailor beware -- but then later on someone said "did you see that spectacular sunrise this morning?". Either I was dreaming about what was actually happening outside my window, or it was some strange combination of dream & awake. There were unicorns there. It was beautiful. Okay, all of that is true except for the bit about the unicorns. That didn't really happen.
Here are some Friday links for ya'll to check out.
1. The
Ugly Tie Championship League is BLOWING UP. Stay tuned...there are new developments on this front. :)
2. This Sunday is quite possibly San Francisco's biggest & best annual party: Bay to Breakers! In the spirit of that, here are
10 Bay to Breakers Survival Tips. [Thanks, Jes!]
3. Somebody please buy me
this (the one with the high back) or
this. It's my ideal "reading by a roaring fireplace" chair. A part of Gatsby's American Dream. The type of chair I want in my library one day.
4. Matteo Ferrati's collection of
then & now photos of people who have driven the same car for a very long time. Really cool stuff! Makes me wish my dad still drove around in that pea green old Datsun he had when we were kids. Except maybe without the hole in the floor. :)
5.
Classic cartoon characters drawn as senior citizens.
6. Logos from presidential campaigns,
1960-2008. As they get back into the mid-80s & before, they get REALLY funky & awesome! I particularly like the LBJ USA sticker from 1964. If I ever run for president, I'm going to do the exact same thing with my face & have it say PBJ USA.
7. A fascinating look at the culture of
secondhand American clothing winding up at markets in Haiti. There's a documentary about it, called
Secondhand (Pepe). Which I really want to see now.
8.
Advice from the R Kelly Trial. Some good tips on how to NOT be on that jury. Though I don't know why anyone wouldn't want in on that. The disturbing nature of the case aside, there's a distinct possibility this may turn into a live performance of a brand new hip hopera.
9. What pumps you up about Seattle?
Photos of people dressed up like a SWAT team cleaning the space needle with high pressure water hoses. So awesome.
10. Be warned,
this will give you seriously itchy feet. It is a photo slideshow from the NY Times about traveling & has nothing to do with athlete's foot.
